2.0 out of 5 stars Great if you want a big screen and nothing else., September 20, 2011

I was kind of excited when I got this item.

I mean it's a Magellen, it has a huge 7 inch screen. It has lifetime maps and traffic. It is their top of the line model.

Well it has the big screen thing going for it, and that is about it.

The interface is slow and clunky, the touchscreen is not that responsive and you have to press down hard on the screen to make it register.

There is only one voice I could find to use. So if you don't like the voice you are in trouble.

The directions were good but the vocal directions awkward and you are alerted when to turn by a bell or a tone, not a voice, and there is no way to change this.

The color scheme on the screen is also pretty ugly and there is not way to change this either.

One nice feature is that the unit has built in blue tooth so you can pair it with your phone and use the GPS as a speaker phone. Which was nice if you don't have a headset or the speakerphone... Read more

GPS navigation devices have come a long way. What used to be exclusive gadgets that only a few could afford has become nearly as ubiquitous as the car stereo. In recent years this trend has only accelerated with the introduction of GPS navigation capabilities to the smartphones. Some of these smartphone GPS solutions are really impressive and give the standalone GPS devices run for their money. However, there is something to be said for having a dedicated device that will do one thing and do it well. That's why I have continued to use the standalone GPS devices, and will likely do so for foreseeable future.

The first thing you notice about this GPS navigator is its size. I knew that 7-inch screen is at least two inches larger than almost any other stand-alone GPS navigation system, but I was still impressed the first time I saw it. Its screen is larger than my Kindle and it's on par with the smaller tablet computers. All this screen real estate helps you see your location... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Traditional GPS But Lacks Innovation of the TomTom, October 20, 2011

Except for the size I have nothing but good things to say about the Magellan RoadMate 9055-LM, but in terms of functionality while driving, to me, it doesn't beat out my TomTom VIA 1535T 5-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic. Hopefully by comparing the two you can decide for yourself which is better for your style of driving.

DISPLAY:

My TomTom has a 5 inch screen and the Magellan has a 7 inch screen. You wouldn't think there was a big difference but the Magellan is comparatively gigantic. In fact, when I switched back to using the TomTom its 5 inch screen seemed tiny.

But this Magellan unit is really too big for my dashboard. I drive a Honda Element which has a coffee table size dashboard and has a very generously wide and tall view out the windshield, but the Magellan is so big... Read more
